Riley Gaines is a former NCAA All-American competitive swimmer who tied for fifth place with transgender swimmer Lia Thomas (born male) at the 2022 NCAA Championships, then was told Thomas would receive the trophy for the photo opportunity. She has since become a prominent advocate for women's sports and the protection of sex-based categories in athletic competition. Her expertise is as a firsthand participant witness, not a policy analyst.
