Relationship to the UN: a UN agency created by the General Assembly in 1949 (Resolution 302), operating since 1950. Runs schools, clinics and relief for registered Palestine refugees in Gaza, the West Bank, Jordan, Lebanon and Syria. Funded mainly by voluntary donations; its staff of roughly 30,000 are mostly locally hired Palestinians. Israeli laws passed in October 2024 barred its operation in Israeli sovereign territory and contact with Israeli officials.
